What did we learn about our robots?

It has been a week since we’ve released Robot Round Robin - A game to teach robots about language.   Why did we make a game? Our company revolves around transcripts. As such, we’ve been doing research into several services that are available today, including IBM Watson, and Google Speech API. We are always running tests to determine which ones are better for the features we are developing. One avenue we wanted to evaluate was listener preference. This is such an enigmatic aspect of transcriptions, as opposed to just knowing which service is more accurate. There are algorithms to do that [...]

Helping robots learn to speak.

Hey everyone! It’s Kelly, technical co-founder here at Signl.fm. I’m happy to announce that we’ve just released robotsroundrobin.com. It’s a game about refining speech-to-text. Kim (our CEO, my cofounder) and I are both from video games. We started out at different times, since I’m a little baby and Kim is so old, but that knowledge has leaked into all of our work. We decided it was time to flex that side of our experience a little more than usual, and thus, Elliot was conceived. The concept is simple: players are shown three automatically-generated transcripts, and asked to select the one [...]

What Watson’s speech-to-text looked like last year.

And now for something a little different. I'm preparing thoughts on the current state of speech-to-text, and what it means for human beings now, and in the future. I thought I'd take a trip down memory lane and show you what speech-to-text looked like back in the bad-old-days of mid-2016. Compared to the geekouts.xyz prototype player transcript (which I'll also post about soon),  I think you'll find it...lacking. Audio and transcript follow. /k Okay Hey folks this is Kim Hanson for signal FM broadcasting from right here in beautiful downtown Vancouver British Columbia which is in Canada. Let [...]

The Doctors will See (and hear) you now

Hey, some more exciting news from Signl.fm; we've officially closed $150k of our $250k pre-seed round. We are joined by two of the most well-known names in Canadian entertainment-software history, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk...formerly known as The Doctors of BioWare.   As the two men who gave me my start in my first career as a game creator, I am incredibly grateful to continue our decade-long association, and look forward to a bright future bringing joy in a new medium—podcasts. /kim

Release: Interactive Karaoke-style Podcast Player Prototype (with sharing!)

www.geekouts.xyz hit the link for our proof-of-concept podcast player, featuring real-time transcripts and clip-sharing. We think you'll like it. We've been working hard on it—you can use it to share podcasts! Well, one specific podcast episode right now :) I wanted to give a little company history here. Ever since our exciting pivot in the summer, we've been focusing a lot of our attention on transcripts. How do we make them, correct them, and engage with them in a meaningful way? You may remember our previous experiment. The goal was to encourage crowd-sourced editing. We learned quite a bit about how [...]

‘Twas the night before release, and all through the house…

...not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Well, not quite true. I'm stirring. Boy, am I ever. Being the lovers of lean startup that we are here at signl.fm, we're releasing a proof-of-concept podcast player tomorrow. It features human-corrected real-time transcripts, and sharing to Twitter. I have to admit, I'm a bit nervous. I bought a few cheap Cuban cigars, and boy are they awful. However, if "2" can be said to be a chain, that is what I am smoking. We'll update in the next few days with some juicy details on how this all came together. /kim

Thank you for allowing us room to find the right formula. From day one we’ve built Signl.fm to be the place on the internet for users to discover, share, and create great audio content. Last time we spoke [...]
